This week on The Great British War Room!
Welcome to the Great British Clone Factory!
Up and Cummerbund
The theme for the final is gala finery, with the last Pattern Challenge of the series being the menswear staple and star of the BBC’s Sherlock, Bow Tie and Cummerbund

which I think is one of the more deceptively difficult Pattern Challenges? Much like last year’s “just make some gloves” being said with the same menacing tone as Jigsaw initiating a game where someone has to slowly remove each of their fingers to escape a stampede of wildebeest that had somehow been sourced in downtown New York

I’m sure it’s more complicated than the relatively little amount of fabric actually on the mannequin! But they’ve had 9 episodes now, so surely they’ve learned to be very discerning of their fabrics and read the instructions very carefu-

honestly, she’s so real for this. Who amongst us actually read all of the test questions? I just looked ahead to see when the questions to Find x of a random polygon were coming so I could work out how long it would be before I cried. Pythagoras is my enemy and when we meet on the Asphodel Meadows, IT’S ON.
Anna’s breaking point on the instruction pamphlet was the point where it got to the bow tie portion, I imagine the cummerbund is a more unknown quantity – how hard can it possibly be to tie 1 bow tie? Except this isn’t just a bow tie, it’s a heathenous clip-on! May The Elder God of Bow Ties, Rose Schmits, SMITE you

there were a couple of struggles with the bow tie across the board, mostly around the decision of whether to interface it or not. A fact that depended entirely on their choice of fabric. Anna had chosen to interface it but this had made her bow tie too big and in need of a girdle if she wanted to get the false knot around it

and thus Emma was very pleased with herself for not having bothered with the interfacing

OH, you THOUGHT

apparently her pink silk dupion wasn’t giving enough volume

Pink Silk Dupion being a name that would slip extremely easily into the cast of the current series of Drag Race UK

can Zohran_Mamdani_X up there please be brought on for the Sewing Bee Christmas Special, I want to see her being woefully delusional about another vague assemblage of fabrics

I was convinced that Design Challenge was the straw that broke the BBC’s back when it came to potentially renewing Drag Race and then Tequila Thirst bombed Snatch Game so hard it actively raised the terror levels of the UK

but I’ll tell you what, watching this while running a 38 degree fever was an absolute riot – “wooden trees” reduced me to tears, which may have also been because I choked on my Strepsil. And that’s the Drag Race Sidebar out of the way, I just need to sometimes make sure it all actually happened and that Ma_Danni_X isn’t The Wirral’s Cryptid – we have video evidence. She is real.
Emma’s scrawny bow tie wasn’t the biggest offender as Beth unfortunately got to the end and found she couldn’t actually properly attach her bow tie because she’d forgotten a hook

meaning the bow wasn’t actually wearable

however, the gold was VERY pretty!

thanks Emma

So with Emma serving up The Thin Pink Duke, David Bow Tie and Beth’s essentially being a glorified present topper, the challenge was very much Anna’s for the taking and the fact her top stitching was upside down was not going to stop that

Patrick, I’ll fight you and Pythagoras.

You Beach!
With menswear taken care of and the main event being left to the Made to Measure, the only aspect of a gala left unplundered was the tablescape as the finalists found themselves having to transform gala tableware into an outfit appropriate for a Beach Club

I don’t quite know why they’d chosen a beach club, I would personally have just told them to make it an outfit for your end of year University’s ball wherein you wear an outfit you look back on and ask yourself “Why did I wear THAT?” because you were essentially going through the dressing yourself for pre-school phase again, except this time there’s more hormones and less ability to rely on the inherent coolness of a Power Rangers t-shirt – NO, you’re not getting that photo of me!
On top of it being Beach Club of Unspecified Locale, the Edna Mode you fed after midnight insisted that it had to be chic

and unfortunately for Anna there’s no such thing as a chic punk beach club

she was not having the most fun with this challenge having jokingly threatened to just shove a chair cover over her mannequin and call it a day

only to get through most of the challenge and realise that “oh no, I’ve become a self fulfilling prophecy!”

and didn’t have much time to do more than quickly slash it to the butt crack

and cover it in the most panicked deployment of pompoms seen since Game of Wool

but honestly, the fact that it kind of looks like the flower girl dress your pedigree Shih Tzu wears at your wedding might have been in Anna’s favour because my theory is that the judges looked at this line-up of outfits

and decided that the purple one was obviously Emma’s because what is she but 50 shades of Dulux purple semi-gloss paint in a jazzy romper

and thought “we can even things up a bit if we put Beth in first place because obviously Anna’s is the artfully draped and interestingly layered organza number, right?… RIGHT?”

I just don’t know if Anna’s looks like she’s going to the beach club so much as the beach club sort of just happened at her. And for someone that I think has a really quite sharp sense of taste – that peony blooming from the navel is crazy person behaviour and a liability for beach-side wasps. I can see the argument that *maybe* Beth’s feels a little more garden party than beach

BUT IT’S SO PRETTY!
Emma had gone for a Jumpsuit, which isn’t something I immediately associate as being particularly beachy, but she was going for the Jiggly Caliente approach of “if you say Saint Tropez” enough times, it eventually becomes true

and she was also adding some sheer panels to the side for ~sauce~

I think we should always just assume undergarments as a given? It’s a Transformation Challenge – Anna barely had enough time to make a sexy pillowcase, they’re not making modesty knickers for the hopeful crotch

in the end the crotch was maybe a bit too hopeful

that reminds me, there’s an appointment I need to chase up.

How I Met Your Brother Sewing Machine
There was only one way they could really end Gala Week and with the Sewing Bee final always being kind of Go Big, Or Go Home (You’re Going Home Anyway) the Met Gala was a natural fit for the occasion

the only thing that really separates it from previous finales was the more poetic theme, which was simply Metamorphosis, so congratulations on avoiding 1 of like a dozen fashion inspo landmines, you’re doing better than The Met, who might be the only people relieved that Dolly Parton and Bob Mackie died but two weeks apart from one another. When life gives you lemons, make it a very sparkly Met Gala theme.
As ever, the usual models have been replaced with clones made from the cell scrapings of the sewing room floor

Emma 2: Electric Blue-galoo is her friend, Tammy

Beth 2: Toky-sew Drift is Skye

and Anna 2: The Squeakquel is Jean Genie, which sounds like the name of a bedazzling product advertised in the ad-breaks of Lizzie McGuire in 2002

Jean Genie, I am obsessed with you.
But if anyone wanted to go really Met Gala with it they could’ve just phoned in their mate Steve and made a boring dinner jacket instead of engaging with the Metamorphosis of it all. Thankfully, all three of the finalists fully engaged with the theme, to varying degrees of literalness – Anna referencing Damselflies that go through metamorphosis

Beth opting for a literary reference in Rumpelstiltskin and the turning of straw into gold

and Emma opting for the transitional phase of Wine Mum to Winier Mum

the biggest problem this faced, other than Patrick pulling this face when he looked at the United Nations of Baffling Fabrics having a summit meeting on her sewing table

was that it just didn’t quite feel like Emma had concentrated enough on the Gala “red carpet event” aspect of the garment – or at least it felt less like it’d walk a red carpet in a time before Shailene Woodley showed up to the Emmy’s like Balenciaga had kitted her out with three random attunable magic items to help her fight the Adult Green Dragon

if Emma has anything going for her, it’s that she’s two steps ahead of the zeitgeist. Emma, please stop the zeitgeist, you’re our only hope!
Anna and Beth definitely had the outfits that I think were more in line with what the show kind of wanted and while I think both are strong garments, Beth’s absolutely sweeps in every category, she kind of snapped something severe with this one

it’s absurd and slightly uncanny in a way that really captures the essences of the best sort of Met Gala outfits. I was initially quite worried about the phrase “stuffed tubes of fabric” because it was giving me war flashbacks to Rodrigo attempting something similar and ultimately only ending up with the ungodly offspring of a Dalek and a Barbie Cake that still haunts me

in the list of TV moments I’ve screamed loudest at, Rodrigo’s jellyfish gown ranks between Jedward being saved over Lucie Jones on The X Factor and all 8 minutes Nikita Kuzmin spent on screen for Strictly’s Instant Microwavable Dance Noodles Challenge

I feel like he and Emma would be kindred spirits. I don’t think the BBC is using Sewing Bee enough for potential crossover events – I know we’ve kicked Drag Race out and changed the locks but I can still wish for annual Dance Week wherein a man who just wants to do sensible tailoring has to learn to deal with the nonsense demands of Katya Jones.
As for Anna, she was going for a smaller, cocktail length dress with the statement pieces of it being the iridescent wings on the front

I like that it’s very recognisable as a piece by Anna, it has a very 80s edge to its cut and textiles. I just think it’s almost a bit small in its impact? Which is a wild thing to say about an outfit that probably isn’t allowed within 20 feet of an incandescent bulb. I think a more artful arrangement of the wings might have helped, as is, they feel a little slapped on? I still think it’s pretty and like Anna is finally making flesh her Winx Club OC (please do not steal) that she’s had since junior school

and my God if that’s not the truth we should all be rocking in 2026, I don’t know what is.
An Unofficial Met Gala Outfit Ranking:
1. Beth’s Garment of the Series
2. Anna’s 300k Winx Club Fanfic (do not steal!)
3. The Disturbance In The Air Shailene Woodley Felt 8 Months Ago
And that was it! There was no more than any of them could do! They were an excellent trio of finalists but Beth and Emma were always going to have a bit of an uphill struggle to upset the likelihood of Anna winning given her consistency and how much her style and skill was resonating with the judges, Patrick doesn’t ugly cry for anyone, lads

and even with Beth pulling off what I think may have been the Garment of the Series with her gala gown in the last minutes of the show, the win still went to Anna

I am thrilled for her, I’m sure the show will be an incredibly important stepping stone in her goal of making it into the world of costume design as a career – how she hasn’t been snapped up before this, I do not know! She’s got it all – talent, personality, your dad’s bisexual awakening

Ah, the power of The Lovely Sebastian™ – Anna he has an entire harem of men over 40 in my mentions, please come and pick them up by next Tuesday or they’ll go out with the plastics.
And it’d be remiss not to congratulate both Emma and Beth on really stellar showings this series

Before we get to my favourite part of the blog, The Alternative Montage, I just want to thank everyone who has been reading these recaps, it never ceases to amaze me that people enjoy these somewhat nonsense ramblings of a mad woman trapped in an attic (can I borrow the Northanger Abbey coat, Anna?) but if you have been reading them and want to support me in my fundraising for my Facial Feminisation Surgery, you can drop a tip at my Ko-fi HERE or at the bottom of the page. It’s an expensive process but honestly, every little helps to keep that goal alive.
ALTERNATIVE MONTAGE TIME!

Recap out! Catch you for Bake Off, yeah?
If you have enjoyed this recap and would like to show your appreciation, you can leave a small donation via my Ko-fi HERE. I am currently saving up for Facial Feminisation Surgery, which all tips will be going towards and are much appreciated!
